4 Years Later

For anyone that's still alive to remember or care, I have some news concerning the soundtrack for that head video I made back in 2014, which was attracting a lot of requests for an extended version. Well, I'm afraid to say things didn't quite work out as expected.

No, instead I went well beyond that and made an entire music-visualisation-extended-sountrack-video out of it! It now has its own title (String Theory), and it can be viewed/heard below. The track is available on Bandcamp (in various formats incl. 24 bit lossless), CD Baby, iTunes, Amazon, Spotify and most other places (not Google Play though unfortunately, as that would cause a conflict with the video).


Note: since YouTube seems to have trouble with thin lines and subtle gradients, I scaled the video up to 4K to reduce compression artefacts. So even though its native resolution is 1080p, it looks better at higher resolutions. If you're using Edge or Firefox and can't access 1440p or 2160p, try the following:

Edge: Type about:flags in the address bar and change "Enable VP9 video format" to "Always On"

Firefox: Type about:config in the address bar and find "media.mediasource.webm.enabled". Double-click on it to change it to "True".

  2. Detailed, impressive, beautiful,galactic... What software was used in this animation? I would like to watch this artwork in a lossless video format. Compressed webm insufficient.

    3. If you select 4K it looks virtually indistinguishable from the original - more noticeable artefacts are present in the render itself rather than being caused by compression.

  4. Revisited your channel the other day and I was hoping you are okay, since there weren't any updates neither on your Youtube channel, nor in here. Great to see you back. Would love for you to make a breakdown, or even sped up timelapse on your rigs. But one cannot be demanding in these matters.

    1. I did go dark for a while there didn't I. Hopefully I can find ways to generate new material more frequently in future, so there's something to report on (other than "I'm still here") :)

  5. This video is so amazing. At the time it only has 880 views, and I dont understand why. I've shared it un twitter cause this need to have the same or more views that Ed. 4 years, glad youre alive. This are the things that I dont forget

    1. It does appear to be a slow mover, but then again the ebb and flow of the internet is a mysterious thing. Maybe it will pick up later. Thanks for helping get it out there though!

    3. I had some things in mind, but I'm re-evaluating now since this one didn't go too well. Probably some more work on the human, but I have to go back to the drawing board on that first.

  10. Insert adequate words that don't yet exist here... I should very much like to understand how this is done. How does one relate to that type of motion or find reference to create, or imitate it? Is that out of your head, are there formulas? Is it math based and coded, or intuitively animated?

    1. It mainly evolved from a bunch of tricks I developed by experimenting with converting audio into data that can be used in Lightwave 3D. Most of it is based on spectrograms passing through objects as displacement maps, somewhat akin to a pianola roll.

    I’m looking for a fluency in armature, that can make limits in its rotation. And having coordinates + angles labeled. With measurements included.

    a human, with constraints

    The shape of the feet and hands and the whole body in detail is what I’m looking for.

    I would need one that’s pretty detailed in shape. Making sure measurements are right and constraints with the ground and other sports objects


    Rendering isn’t so much the issue. It’s more of getting the measurements of the figure right and then the camera has to have a good field of view + focal length


    Armatures is like a big thing in this. So any expert in it would be great.


    On top of that I would have to integrate code into this

    Like an animation software that works well with programming

    Will you be able to help me with that.
    I've talked to other expert blender artists and they've told me you might be able to help me with this.

  13. Good night Chris, I'm Brazilian, I wanted to congratulate you on your work because it is so good that it arrived in another country. I don't have a PC and I'm not very experienced, but I really like CGI. I wanted to ask how did you do this job? why the sounds are very synchronized with the images,the lights and those lines, seem to follow the rhythm of the sound, and that makes everything perfect. It's not something that can be easily explained in a comment section, but most of it was made using screen captures of spectrograms applied to ribbed planes as displacement maps, and as a means of affecting object instancing and light intensities (you might need to look some of those things up ;) ).

  14. I really agree with what you said at the beginning of the comment, I didn't understand anything hahahahah. I thought that video was great, it would be good if I had a PC because I really want to do CGI, even your video aroused my interest in building music, How are they made even though they are so complex? Where do people get a base to create something like that? It fascinates me, it's as if all of that popped up in the person's mind out of nowhere, I can't imagine a totally new soundtrack, without being similar to another one already created, nor using all my neurons. And congratulations man, for the artist you are, it really is admirable
